Little Shop of Horrors: Interviews with the Stars
Little Shop of Horrors is a musical that takes place in a flower shop in downtown Skid Row and centers around Seymour Krelborn, a plant loving flower shop employee who one day purchases a unique fly trap and names it after the girl he loves, Audrey. Audrey is also an employee of the flower shop, but she has gone through many struggles. She is trapped in an abusive relationship and she doesn't see her worth or her true beauty.
The show follows the story of Seymour and Audrey together, and of course, the little flytrap that makes the flower shop famous as it grows and grows and grows. Everything seems to be going swell for Seymour, as he is rich, has offers to be on TV and in magazines, and has sparked worldwide interest with his amazing plant.
But there's a secret he's been keeping from everyone. A terrible secret that he knows is terrible- but it's his only way to keep the plant named Audrey 2 alive, and if he doesn't have his plant, he fears Audrey won't love him anymore. This musical is an upbeat tragicomedy that focuses on human morals, love, money and fame, and of course, plants! I interviewed two members of the cast, Josh Foisy and Madison Govaert, who play Seymour Krelborn and Audrey in Stage One’s upcoming musical production!

•What was your reaction when you found out you got the role of Seymour?
Josh: I was freaking out! I would never expect that I'd get the role of Seymour Krelborn.
•What's it like getting to play Seymour?
Josh: Playing Seymour is probably one of the best things that ever could've happened to me. It’s a great experience!
•What kind of journey do we get to see Seymour go on?
Josh: Seymour gets a plant from a total eclipse of the sun, and he raises it himself and strange things happen to it. At the beginning Seymour’s a nobody trying to help sell plants for his shop, and at the end of the musical he's gone kinda crazy.
•What makes this show unique?
Josh: It's not afraid to take risks. It goes beyond the limits of [commonly known] struggles.
•What’s your favorite part of being in Little Shop of Horrors?
Josh: My favorite part is going through the story.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•What was your reaction when you found out you got the role of Audrey?
Maddie: I screamed. I didn't believe it at first! I danced and hugged my mom.
•What is it like getting to play Audrey?
Maddie: I don’t know how to describe it! I learned there is a bit more depth to playing a character [such as Audrey] than I thought there was. It's a lot of practicing in high heels and high pitched voices.
•What is your favorite song in the musical?
Maddie: Are you kidding me? I listen to the whole soundtrack every night. Suddenly Seymour has got energy and I get to belt [that] song so that's pretty cool!
•What do you want the audience to take away from this show as they watch it?
Maddie: "Don't feed the plants" Haha! I guess don't sell your soul for greed or you don't have to become someone you're not in order to get the girl, but in a more general sense I want people to feel the love of theatre from our show. The musicals are probably the most fun shows to put on and we're all having fun on stage singing and dancing and we want to convey that passion to the audience.
Little Shop of Horrors is opening this week from May 11th-13th! The show starts at 7:00 pm each night, and tickets cost $10 each, with a student special price of $8 on Thursday night!
