Music Monday No. 7: "Holy Diver"
Welcome to this week's edition of Music Monday! I hope everyone had a great winter break and a happy new year. This week’s winning song is "Holy Diver" by Dio. I personally have never heard this song before this… and it is not what I was expecting!
The song starts out with an almost ‘halloween-ish’ wolf howling and wind sounds, but after almost a minute of that it turns into a rock song. The noises at the beginning are almost hard to explain and are an interesting addition to this song. The guitar in this song sounds really good. And not to mention the singers voice, which is also actually quite rich.
This song is on Dio’s debut album released in 1983, also called Holy Diver. Although you may not recognize the name Dio, the vocalist Ronnie James Dio just finished his first tenure in the band Black Sabbath. This album is also said by critics to be some of Dio’s best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre.
The cover art, which at first had me taking a closer look, was actually explained to be the band mascot in the back with chains, while a priest or minister is in the water. Dio was quick to rebut and announce it could easily be a priest killing a devil, as well as saying appearances are misleading and not to judge a book by it's cover. Others noticed, while Dio determined this completely coincidental, the Dio logo flipped upside down looks like ‘DIE’ or ‘DEVIL’. Take a look for yourself!
Well, the only way for you to hear what I'm talking about is if you give the song a listen here on YouTube or Spotify. What do you think? Your new jam, or not your cup of tea?
