Review of "Cabaret"

Over the past few days, Stage One’s recent musical, "Cabaret", has been playing here at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. This production is about a young American writer, Clifford Bradshaw, and his time in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich. During this period, Clifford meets different people, one of whom is Sally Bowles, a performer at the Kit Kat Klub where the Emcee introduces performances and entertains the audience.

Throughout the play, the singing is very professional and the acting, along with the songs themselves, transports the audience back in time to Germany in the 1930s. The time period is conveyed shockingly well and audience members are able to understand the struggles of all the characters. The entire cast, including Deana Geomelos, Alex Serino, and Mitchell Barnes, all captivate listeners with their voices and connect with the audience through the portrayal of their characters. The dance routines of the entire cast are choreographed very well and the music provided by the band is very appropriate for each scene.

In the play’s program, it mentions how the show slowly progresses from having an upbeat mood to being described as depressing and melancholy. By the end of the production, many audience members are left thinking of the somber events which occurred during this point in history. In addition to this, one of the most interesting parts of the play is how each musical number furthers the ideas mentioned in the scene before it. This allows the audience to fully comprehend what is going on and appreciate each scene.
